YEAR 9 - 11 MATHEMATICS
Maths in Hands-On Engineering
Take mathematical modelling and equations out of the textbook and into the real world with our immersive mathematical hydrology activity.

Note that this activity is tailored to the year level and ability of the participating students. In this 90-minute session, options include students:
-
exploring the basic functionality of the tabletop hydraulic flume and its variables.
-
calculation of flow rate using a simple formula.
-
analysis of Manning's equation to determine water velocity, including transposition,
-
development of empirical vs theoretical formulae, and
-
analysis of flow over a weir using either formula or from first principles using introductory rates of change and calculus.

These sessions are designed to integrate with CAS calculator use for relevant classes.
